Education in The United States

In the United States, there are both public and private schools. Around 85 percent of the population graduates from a high school, and around 55 % finish college. Schooling is required for all the children living in America in all 50 states, generally between the ages of 6 or 7 years until the age of 16 to 18, depending on the state. About 90 percent of school children in the United States attend a state public school, which is free of tuition and coeducational. The remainders attend a private school, which is often operated by a religious denomination. There is also a rapidly increasing trend for parents to home school their own children in the United States. School uniforms are beginning to become more popular in the public schools of larger cities.

The student's school day in the United States typically starts with a recital of the American Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag. Parents are encouraged to get involved with Parent Teacher Associations. Many parents in the United States also send their children to preschool, day care or kindergarten before they have reached the age of 6 years old. Public schools are usually divided into Elementary, Junior High, and High School.
